Renting a car in the Philippines for the first time
By E-Rentals Manila ·
A rental car can give you freedom to change plans. It also gives you responsibility for parking, unfamiliar roads and the vehicle itself. Before choosing self-drive, take an honest look at the kind of holiday you want.
Decide whether you actually need to drive
If most of your stay is around one hotel and a few nearby attractions, compare transfers and other transport with the full cost of keeping a car. If you plan regular family visits or a longer stay, having a vehicle may make more sense.
If you would rather enjoy the journey than navigate, compare a properly arranged chauffeur service. Ask what is included in the driver’s working hours and any overnight arrangements; do not assume a self-drive listing includes a driver.
Ask about eligibility before making a payment
Send the provider your intended rental dates and ask for its written licence, identity, age and payment requirements. Requirements can differ between providers. Use a verified private channel for documents, not a public comment thread.
Check current official driving guidance for your licence. For example, the UK government describes a 90-day allowance for UK licences; this is specific guidance, not a promise that every visitor will qualify for a rental.
Explain the route, not just the pickup city
Tell the provider if you intend to leave Metro Manila, visit a province or take a ferry. Ask which destinations and uses the agreement allows. A car being available in Manila does not mean every route is approved.
Leave room in the itinerary for rest and unexpected delays. Check weather and local road advice before longer journeys. If conditions feel unsafe, change the plan rather than treating the schedule as a deadline.
Make the first and last hour unhurried
Inspect the car with the representative before loading everything. Check the recorded damage, fuel, odometer, tyres, lights and air-conditioning. Ask how to reach support and where the relevant vehicle documents are kept.
At return, allow time for the same checks and ask for a written acknowledgment. Keep fuel receipts, payment records and the handover photos until any final charges or deposit have been resolved.
